Understanding the Process of Translating Japanese to English and Translating English to Japanese.

These two languages are as different as night and day requiring special attention to details when translating.

First, Japanese is a character-based language, which means it uses specific characters from a large character base to represent thoughts or feelings.

English on the other hand is a somewhat complicated written language using a small phonetic alphabet in a more definitive manner. When translating one to the other, you will see drastic changes in the volume of content.

Translating English to Japanese can increase volume by 20% to 60% while translating Japanese to English can reduce volume by 10% to 50%. Keep in mind this can vary depending on the nature of the document and many variables within the documents.

Details of a Japanese Translation.

As stated earlier, special attention needs to be exercised when translating between these two languages. The current Japanese writing system utilizes three different character sets in order to accommodate an expanding vocabulary.

The first character set uses what is called Kanji, which in its original form contained approximately 50,000 characters. Today, only about 6,000 characters are used in government documents in Japan.

The last two character sets are Hiragana and Katakana. These are syllabary meaning they are based on the use of syllables. Hiragana and Katakana are used to build word structures when Kanji cannot be used. This is an overly simplified explanation of the system, but it does provide an idea of how it works.

The next area of consideration is the translated documents final layout. In modern Japan, two layouts have become mainstream. Western style, which is horizontal rows from top to bottom or Traditional Japanese style that is vertical columns from right to left on the page.

Depending on whom your translated document will be addressing determines what layout needs to be used and whether or not it will be accepted. While at first this may seem to be a small detail in actuality, it can be a major factor in the overall impact of your document.
